Our History

The Founding and Growth of Andenet Meredaja Edir (AME)

In 2013, the Ethiopian Community and Cultural Center (ECCC) in Oakland identified a profound and recurring challenge within the Ethiopian-American community: the emotional and financial hardships families faced when losing a loved one. While grief is universal, for many immigrant families—far from extended kin and without established local support systems—funerals carried not only emotional weight but also significant financial strain.

In response to this growing need, ECCC initiated a series of community consultations, listening sessions, and a comprehensive research process to explore meaningful, sustainable solutions. The goal was clear: to provide collective, culturally resonant support for families during their most difficult moments.

These efforts culminated in the founding of Andenet Meredaja Edir (AME) on April 25, 2015—a mutual aid organization rooted in the Ethiopian tradition of edir, which emphasizes solidarity, shared responsibility, and communal care. AME was established with a clear mission: to ease the burden of loss by offering financial assistance and emotional support to grieving families, while upholding the cultural values that have long united and sustained Ethiopian communities.

What began as a visionary initiative within ECCC has since evolved into a fully independent and flourishing organization. Today, AME proudly serves more than 1,200 members across the Greater Bay Area. It has become a trusted and vital part of the community—an embodiment of compassion, collective action, and cultural continuity.

AME is entirely led and managed by committed Ethiopian volunteers. These individuals bring decades of combined experience from a range of sectors, including business leadership, nonprofit management, community organizing, finance, and social services. Their dedication ensures that AME operates with integrity, transparency, and an intimate understanding of the community’s needs.

Beyond financial support, AME is a vibrant example of how cultural traditions can be preserved and reimagined in the diaspora. It is not merely a funeral assistance program—it is a living network of mutual care, offering families comfort, peace of mind, and the reassurance that they are not alone.

As AME continues to grow, it remains firmly rooted in its founding principle: that no one should face grief in isolation. By standing together in moments of loss, we honor both our ancestors and one another—affirming the enduring strength of community, heritage, and shared humanity.
