What is Edir?

In Ethiopian society, where death is treated as a communal matter, burial societies known as Edir are important social networks based on neighborhood , occupation, gender and so on. Edir traditionally stands for performing burial ceremonies, comfort deceased relatives, and also to offer financial assistance to the immediate family.

WHAT IS EDIR?

Edir is a term used in Ethiopia to describe a community-based mutual aid and cooperative system designed to support the families of deceased individuals through both funeral arrangements and financial assistance.

In a country where traditional life or death insurance as known in the Western context may be scarce, these non-profit organizations play a crucial role. Organized around key societal pillars such as neighborhood, occupation, and gender, Edir societies are integral social networks.

Their main functions include performing burial ceremonies, comforting the bereaved relatives, and providing financial help to those immediately affected by the loss. This framework not only ensures that essential funeral rites are carried out respectfully but also strengthens communal ties, offering vital emotional and financial support during times of mourning.
